The Punchscan system
is fully implemented in open-source Java and used in binding elections.
It includes an option to upgrade PDF ballots, typically sent for printing
by existing voting systems, to include the Scantegrity symbols per ballot.
The audit processes supported by the Punchscan software,
which include all those called for by Scantegrity,
can then be used.
Scantegrity also needs scan information from the existing voting system.
Where industry standard scanning is used by the existing system,
Punchscan can accept the scan images directly.
Where legacy “mark-sense” is used by the existing system,
all that’s needed is data indicating the positions marked per ballot, which
is easily converted to
Punchscan’s open XML format.
Alternatively, after ballots have been scanned by legacy systems, such as at polling places,
any standard production scanner can be operated by Punchscan software to efficiently
get the needed data by re-scaning the ballots centrally.
